The Orange Tower

Paul Asbury Seaman thumbnail
Paul Asbury Seaman The Rosen Corporation name is a reference to the “Blade Runner” movie, with its almost equally-seminal soundtrack by Greek symphonic synthesizer pioneer Vangelis. This is a more laid back and reflective outing than some of Baldwin’s previous work, but maintains the spacious atmospheres that give room for long rhythmic excursions to stretch out. Though unabashedly nostalgic, this music is more subtle and more adventurous than most “new age” music. Favorite track: Part 4.

about

At some point during the period when I was recording the material for this album I saw the film “Holy Mountain” by Alejandro Jodorwosky. I had known about it for years but had never seen it until this point. Visually the film is quite arresting, especially one sequence where a Christ like figure is hoisted up the side of a tall orange stone tower. At the top he discovers an impossibly large hall inhabited by an Alchemist and his mute tattooed assistant. Eventually the Christ- like man becomes the disciple of the Alchemist along with 8 others, and they embark on a quest to ascend the holy mountain of the title.
Perhaps one central theme of the film is one of change, of changing one kind of matter to something of higher worth. The film presents both beautiful and challenging images, surreal, psychedelic, violent, philosophical and metaphysical. It leaves an impression, and so it did with me.

It resonated as personally I was also experiencing something of a change in my life which had caused me to look inward.

The resulting work is a collection of pieces both loosely inspired by the film “Holy Mountain” and my personal reflections.

All tracks were recorded as two layered live take performances. Only hardware sequencing and control was used, no software instruments.
